My First Time In A College Dorm
My introduction to the freshman dorm was nothing out of the ordinary. There were thousands of students, just like me, who were being dropped off by their parents with their belongings. I was not going to be facing this challenge alone. I was also confident in my preparation having performed at a high level in my college exams and prep classes. Nevertheless, I remained anxious about facing this more competitive environment on my own.
For recreation, I packed my alvarez acoustic guitar. This was my little escape. When strumming away on the strings I not only felt relaxed but also was able to stimulate my creative juices. School work was more than enough to exercise the left side of my brain. This provided a little balance.
Another hobby I planned on pursuing was keeping scrapbook pages of my college experience. The book would be a great way to mark my progression over the years. Also, it would be ideal as a way to remember this time years from now. I got the idea from my parents. They each showed me their personal scrapbooks in order to give me an idea of what to expect.
In order to help me survive on my own, my mother thought it would be wise to do some cooking every now and again in order to avoid the pervasive junk food diet. I did not want to fall into the trap of the freshman forty and gain weight as so many are apt to. Although I did have a meal plan, there is a tendency to over eat when faced with a multitude of eating choices. In order to provide a healthy substitute, my mom packed an anodized cookware set.
The majority of my bags were packed with clothes. All sorts of clothes for all types of weather. The rest of my bags were full of books, a computer, sound system, and some sporting equipment. I enjoyed playing basketball, football, and throwing the occasional frisbee.
Upon entering my room, i noticed how small it was. There was not enough closet space for my clothes and other belongings. I would have to do some additional shopping for storage equipment. Also, there was a bed, mattress, and a desk. I needed to get some bedding accessories.
The biggest change in dorm life was the bathroom situation. The bathrooms were communal and coed. This included the toilet stalls, sinks, and even the showers. However, there was enough separation between each compartment to leave some sense of privacy. College life was not only going to challenge me intellectually, but also on a social level. It was a challenge I was prepared to meet.
