Oil has to be found before well drilling equipment becomes important. That’s generally the job of a geologist. In reality they don’t find oil, the find areas where oil is likely to be found. They find signs of oil in a variety of ways. The oldest method is to observe surface conditions. They still do that, enhanced with satellite imagery. But they also take seismic surveys. This involves sending shock waves that are reflected back from the rock. Then the reflected wave is examined to see if oil is likely present. Oil flows cause slight gravity shifts which can be detected with a gravity meter. They even use a GPS to note the location of possible oil. With all this, the success rate to locate oil fields is only 10%.
Once oil is found the site must be prepped to accommodate well drilling equipment. It’s a little bit like preparing food before using the pan and stove to cook it. There are impact studies to conduct to determine how drilling will affect the environment. The legal issues such as land rights have to be settled. Then the preparation of the drill site can take place.
Well drilling equipment sits on the sidelines while the area is made ready. Access roads are built, and then the area is cleared and leveled for easy access. The next step is to supply water – either by drilling a well or piping it in from somewhere else. Finally they prepare a plastic lined pit where the rock, mud and other debris will be deposited. For some sites this refuse must be trucked away and disposed of somewhere else.
Its still not time for the well drilling equipment. The rig holes are made, then a rectangular put is dug. That’s where the rig and other equipment go to work. Drilling can now begin.
A rig as well as a drill truck are part of the well drilling equipment. A drill truck is smaller than the rig. It starts the drilling in the main hole. Then the rig takes over for the remainder of the job.
It takes a lot of preparation before well drilling equipment can do its job.
