The History Behind Dr. Who & Its Audios

Almost everyone in countries like the United Kingdom, US, Canada, New Zeeland, Australia etcetera should have at the very least heard of the world famous Sci-Fi television series DW from the BBC! With the rebirth of the serial in 05 after a 15 year stop, DW is as popular as ever with shows being transmitted on the international Science fiction channel and even on USA TV channels in addition to the BBC’s transmissions.

Thanks to the new series Doctor Who is now officially the longest running Sci-Fi show ever with the first episode shown by the BBC on November the 23rd 1963, an episode in which the Dr. and his comrades travelled back one hundred thousand years into Earth’s past to aid some somewhat stupid cavemen so that they could discover fire. Star Trek happens to be the second longest running Sci-Fi show of all time having began in nineteen sixty thee with episodes being produced up in to only a few years ago.

During the 70s the BBC expanded Dr. Who into the audio median creating the first Doctor Who Audio. Initially the BBC only made soundtracks from the original TV series and then had the Drs of the time add some binding narration for completion. However due to their popularity soon after stories were made for Audio Book release only, often narrated by past Doctors of the serial.

To add to this the BBC began making radio episodes, again with past Drs who had played in the serial, these episodes were also made available in Audio format. Also a lot of of the lost stories have been re created by their original Doctors in the Audiobook format making them once more available to the public once again. The collection spans all the way though the first Dr right up until the present Dr, David Tennant. Also Torchwood Audiobooks and Sarah Jane Audio Books have also been added in recent times.

On our planet today audio is even more popular than ever thanks to MP3 players. With multitasking becoming more and more an important part of our lives it’s not surprising that Audio Book sales for both Dr. Who and in general have increased. Another reason why folks like Doctor Who audio is because in many cases the audio stories are now read by the actors of the serial. Mothers and fathers also buy them for kids entertainment in cars etc.

The way things stand right now it looks like Dr. Who and its spin-off serial torchwood and the Sarah Jane adventures are doing really well so things look good for fans to be able to be entertained by them for some years to come.
