Our Thirsty World
You are thirsty. You obtain a glass and walk over to the kitchen faucet. Turn the spigot and out comes fresh, clean, satisfying water. You probably don’t stop to think how lucky you are, and how millions of people around the world cannot do the simple thing you just did.
There is a water crisis in our world; people are dying now. Why do we have this crisis when there seems to be water all over the world? Because 97% of the world’s water is undrinkable. Most of this undrinkable water is salt water from the oceans — water that is by definition unfit for drinking.
As for the drinkable water, a majority of it has been polluted or contaminated; this is due to our industrial waste, and large companies still dumping waste into normally safe sources of drinking water.
Most of us in the USA don’t even notice that all of this is going on; in our nation we are blessed with abundant pure drinking water. Many businesses or offices we visit have bottled water available for us to drink. More often than not, when we dine at a restaurant we are served a glass of water as soon as we arrive. Most vending machines even offer bottled water now.
Water is necessary for humans to live healthily and because of this water crisis, millions are ill or dying; especially people in developing countries where they are even fighting over water. Babies and old people suffer the highest death rates because of this crisis. Did you know that 4,900 babies die every day because of lack of clean drinking water? It is a shocking number.
Gradually this has become clear: there is an immediate need for new water treatment plants, and also for new ways to treat sewage water. These are the new water machines that we really need.
Assuredly, this is a very tall order for our world today. Now a new generation of machines can make water out of air, and special treatment plants can take the salt out of saltwater.
With the crisis becoming worse, there are many companies, some of them new, working on responsive technology. The water crisis is getting worse as underwater sources in some areas are being polluted; consequently, the crisis could soon affect the USA as well as other developed countries.
Currently there is a machine on the market that can produce approximately 500 gallons of drinkable water right out of the air. Such a water machine isn’t portable, but at least this new technology is being worked on.
Portable water machines such as this will probably be the wave of the future, and be located in virtually every home, restaurant, office, and business. But now, at last, this crisis is being recognized. We are hopeful that this realization has not come too late.
